MU v. KU rivalry
This reporter has it right. Kansas doesn't want to continue the 120 year old rivalry because they're having a little temper tantrum and is jealous that we're going on to bigger (....we'll see if it's better) things.
in the meantime here's some great Mizzou is better than Kansas pictures.

Cardinal Nation
Go Cards! I think it's possible to beat the Brewers over the next 3 games. Especially with home field advantage tonight. As long as we don't have another pitching meltdown like the other night, it's completely possible

just incase you forgot
incase you weren't aware that this year is officially the 100th year of homecoming for mizzou
under the radar sport
This is a really well done article about Hope Solo and women's soccer in general. It brings up a few good points about the fact that the more she/anybody else on the team is in the news the more soccer gets publicized. Thinking about it, it's a shame soccer isn't as appreciated in America as it is everywhere else in the world, because it's a great sport and really fun to watch. It's a fairly short article and a good read.

#43 domination
My favorite football player, Troy Polamalu is sticking with the Steelers through 2014 according to ESPN. You've got to respect the Steelers for being able to extend contracts with most of their big players. I'm definitely looking forward to this season in the NFL

college game day
Some of you know that College Game Day came to Mizzou for homecoming last year. It was our huge game against Oklahoma. So far they've only announced where they're going on the first three dates. They still have open October 15th, which is Mizzou's homecoming. Given that it's the 100th homecoming (and mizzou invented homecoming) and that they really liked the backdrop of the columns and Jesse hall, and we broke the record for most people in attendance during the broadcast on the quad, and we beat #1 Oklahoma, I'm hoping they'll come back then. It would be really cool if they came back because that made homecoming more awesome. So hopefully they'll come back

A&M move
According to ESPN.com Texas A&M is considering moving to the SEC conference instead of staying with the Big 12. They say that it's because they're worried about the future stability of the Big 12. Here's some of my reasons why I think it's a good plan in theory, but a bad one in reality.
In theory: yes, I agree that the future of the Big 12 may be shaky. But, as far as I can see in the wake of Nebraska and Colorado leaving the conference, the other teams seem content with where they are. Things may change in the future, but things are always changing around because there's a lot of NCAA conferences and a lot of teams with different goals for their future.
in reality: If we're strictly talking football, they'd get crushed. Even in the big 12 (as much as I hate to admit it as a Mizzou fan) isn't a very strong conference (especially with the leaving of Nebraska), everybody who knows the slightest about football knows that. Granted, Oklahoma is currently ranked #1 overall. But traditionally, the consistently dominant schools come from the SEC. Mizzou, Nebraska, and Oklahoma have been battling it out for the Big 12 championship for the past few years with A&M lost in the shuffle. How can they expect to stand up to teams like Georgia, Arkansas, and Auburn (well, at least last year's team).
In retrospect it really wouldn't devastatingly hurt the Big 12 or intensely benefit the SEC. Granted, it would be sad to see them go because they're always a fun team to play. My thoughts are that they probably won't end up going through with it. But who knows, maybe they'll actually go through with it

commissioner conflict
This ESPN article describes really well how the NFL players feel about Commissioner Goodell. I'm glad they were able to find players that can describe their feelings about him without reverting to name calling (James Harrison is a great player, but seriously Harrison you shouldn't be allowed to speak to the media anymore about stuff like this). Goodell needs to learn how to gain the respect of the players. Right now he doesn't seem to care what the players have to say about anything, which you think would be counterintuitive considering what his job is. I'm not asking for him to be best friends with all the players, but you'd think that he'd at least look to gain the respect of the guys that are actually playing the sport.

iron man
So there was a 2 hour documentary on tv today following various stories of people who participated in the 2010 Iron Man in Hawaii. It was really amazing stuff. It of course followed some of those elite athletes who won and were really competitive in the race. But it wasn't the stories of those guys that I enjoyed watching.
I really loved hearing about all the "normal" or "average-joe" people that entered the race. Mainly because those are the ones that we can actually relate to. Racing isn't their career, it's just something they really want to do. There's a few stories about a guy who survived cancer, another one who had a heart transplant, a hard working mother of 4, and my personal favorite Lew Hollander who completed his 21st Iron Man last year. He's quite a sight to behold, because he's got the greatest mentality of keep on trucking even if he's 80. I met one of those at the sprint triathlon I did this past May, which leads me to believe that that's the mentality of their generation.
They did a great job at the end, especially, showing all the normal people who were finishing around the midnight cut off point. There's something about seeing those people push through all that pain and insane 16-17 hours of swimming/biking/running. Even though I know that I'll probably never be able to do something like that it's cool to think about it.

USA!! USA!!
wow! Did you see that women's soccer game vs. Brazil? I was 9 years old when the 1999 women's team won the world cup and I've still got the Mia Hamm jersey hanging in my closet to prove it. As a soccer player at that time, I loved that time and remember every minute of it. I really hope this 2011 team does that same thing. I'm thinking Abby Wambach and Hope Solo are the new Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly. But seriously the game is on again at 11/12 central time tonight, so watch it, it's amazing. Go USA!
By the way, have you noticed that USA seems to care more about the women's world cup team then about the men's? I think that's the one major sport in the United States where you can a women's team is cared about more then a men's. It's probably because the women's team has actually won a world cup, but that's neither here nor there.

ultimate frisbee: offense
Alright here's the basics of ultimate offense. First off, there's 7 players on each team. The players on the field are split into handlers and cutters. For the most part there's 3 handlers and 4 cutters.
Handlers: handlers in general tend to be the brains of the operation and the safety net for other players to throw to if nobody else is open. They're kind of like the QB of a football team except they have to work together really well. Handlers usually have the ability to huck (throw far down the field) both forehand and backhand. They do less running than the cutters, but are always looking and reading the other players movements. It's every players job to know how fast other teammates can run/what kind of cuts they make so that they can place the disc perfectly, but handlers are especially responsible for this. For the most part they line up perpendicular with the long end of the field.
Depending on where the disc is on the field/who has it, the handlers switch among themselves. They switch between the left/middle/right positions. It's their job to "swing" the disc, which means that they pass the disc laterally between them to get the disc from left-right and visa vera. This allows cutters to get open on both sides of the field and makes the defense run that much more.
They look down the field for open cutters, and hopefully are able to get it down field. Because it's common sense that you can throw the frisbee across the field as much as you want, but that doesn't help you get it down field to the end zone. Once they get it to the cutter it's the cutters job to either throw it back to a handler, who has hopefully run up even with the cutter, or if they're good enough to look down the field to an open cutter. But, it's the handlers job to be there as a safety net if the cutter can't find another cutter to throw to. The disc will go back to the handler who can throw it to a handler on the L/R side and the process starts all over again.
When it comes down to it, good handlers make a great team. You can't expect to win games if you don't have handlers who can't swing the disc and huck it down field. I once played with a handler who wasn't very fast at all, but she could always anticipate where the disc was going to be. She was always the best player on the team because of this fact; she knew where to be at the right time. Even though every player benefits from being fast, it's not as necessary for handlers as it is for cutters.
Seeing how long this took to explain I'll cover the role of the cutters in a future post. At later dates I'll go over: offensive and defensive plays, types of throws, and probably random facts about frisbee.

ultimate frisbee
Given that I played ultimate frisbee for Mizzou for a year and a half, I figured I'd spend a few posts talking about the ins and outs of ultimate. It's my favorite game to play cause all you need is a disc, field, and some friends. I hope by the end of it you will understand that organized games require a lot of skill, anticipation, teamwork, and amazing cardio. Ultimate is so much more than just running around trying to catch a frisbee. i'll probably split it into offense/defense/tournaments/miscellaneous. So be expecting those sometime in the next few weeks

Tressel
It's a real shame Tressel ended up quitting. If you think about it the whole situation it kind of childish. It seems like some players trading autographs for tattoos wouldn't be such a big deal. Yes, it was wrong and Tressel should have punished them when he found out about it, but the media has made it a bigger deal than it needs to be.
College football is going to lose a good coach. And as a side note is anybody else sick of the way NFL/NCAA football is dealing with all their current situations such as the lock out and this.

new missouri QB
well it looks like the race for the QB spot is now done. Tyler Gabbert decided to transfer, leaving the job open for James Franklin. I'm actually pretty relieved, because of all the options he's probably the best fit. He seems to be able to run the spread offense of Mizzou fairly well. From the few games that I've seen him play in, I've noticed a few things.
Positive: he's really good under pressure in the red zone. They had to bring him in a few times this past season when Gabbert couldn't get the job done in the red zone. He's a great runner, and I think given time to get stronger he'll be able to break tackles really well. Granted the NFL doesn't particularly look for that in a QB, but he's only going to be a sophomore and has a few years to improve. Negative: he's got a pretty good arm, but it's not a "cannon" yet. Over this next season I believe that he'll be able to build that up. Aside from that I don't know a whole lot about him, because he's only made a few appearances. But, as a tiger football fan I'm relieved that he's got the job. His few appearances have been positive and I have confidence in his abilities to grow over the next season or two.

tiger basketball
All of us Mizzou basketball fans are happy to see this. I've never seen Tyrek Coger play in person, so I'm trusting the stats on this one. But it's a relief because we need a forward after the leaving of our senior Justin Safford. The fact that his main downpoint is conditioning is a welcome relief, because conditioning is significantly easier to improve than anything else. Hopefully he is good from the 3-point line, because it's safe to say that 3 point shots aren't exactly the tigers strong point....at all. Word is that the new head coach Frank Haith is a good recruiter, so lets see what he brings here next year.

new Cards addition
Lance Berkman is a great new addition to the Cardinals lineup, and evidently I'm not the only one who thinks so. Though he's potentially injury prone, given his past injuries, he's definitely worth keeping. I'm sure I speak for most of the Cards fans in saying that we're excited to see how he progresses through the season. I mainly want to know if this strong streak will last up to and through the all star break.

trizou results
Today was trizou triathlon day. It was so much fun, and I'll definitely be doing it in future years. My stats were:
Division place (Female 20-24): 11th out of 29
swim (400 meters)/run to bike/transition 1: 11:04
Bike (14miles)/transition 2: 1:04:05
Bike rate: 14mph
Run (3 miles): 27:42
run pace: 9:14
finish: 1:42:51
I realize these aren't spectacular stats. But I wanted to finish in 2 hours, so finishing 17 minutes quicker than that makes me happy. Next year I'm aiming to get in the top 10 if not the top 5 of my division. This race wasn't for time or perfect form, it was just to figure out how the world of triathlons work. Next year I'll focus on time a little more. The only thing that was a problem was the swim start. Because it was in a pool, people started one at a time, according to how fast they could swim. So given that I'm a super slow swimmer I was literally one of last people to start (there were probably only 50 people behind me in line). So with 700ish people starting I had to wait almost two hours to start. By the time I ran out to my bike some people were already done.
But, enough of the bad and let me tell you about how amazing it was. The thing about races is that training is about 1000x worse than the race itself. When we got there at 6:10 am this morning people were already there and things were in full swing. It's such a cool atmosphere at races (specifically this tri). There's people riding their fancy road bikes down the street, others in their one piece body suits, and some setting shoes and bike helmets in their transition area. Plus during the race there's other people there doing the same thing you are so it makes it seem so much better. I can't even tell you how appreciative I am of encouraging volunteers on the course. It's just clapping and general encouragement that they give to everybody, but it's always helpful.
The whole thing was actually easier than I thought it would be. But, it helps that it was 55 degrees and cloudy, which I thought would be horrible but it's perfect weather because it's warm enough not to freeze from the pool, but cool enough to not feel like you want to collapse. The running part was easier than I thought it would be. I'm thinking it's because my legs were already so tired from biking, that I couldn't feel the pain. Usually I'm a 9:30 mile, and I'm confounded as to how I was able to run faster after biking 14 miles and swimming 400 meters than just running 3 miles straight up. Or maybe it's because I was thinking about pacing myself the whole time.
But, probably my favorite thing about races is the people. It's like races make it completely normal to become good friends with that stranger standing next to you. When you're sitting/standing there for two hours you find a lot of things to talk about with these complete strangers. Secondly I was amazed at the age range. I figured the ages would be from 18-50 and oh was I completely wrong. There was a group of 8-12 year olds, I only wish I was kidding. They could just zip through the course because they had no body weight to carry, plus they have a never ending supply of energy. Than there's the really old people, that was even more surprising. There was actually a guys age group from 75-90.....yeah. I think I passed that guy during the run and of course had to tell him how amazing he was for doing it and his response was "quitters never win, winners never quit" Wow, I hope I've got that mentality at 80 years old when running a triathlon.
Moral of the story: it was awesome and if you ever get the chance to do a sprint triathlon than do it.

trizou update
the TriZou triathlon is one week from now. They've been sending out emails about the race for the past week. One described the bike/run course and the bike course is gonna be extremely hard. It's a big circle with two huge hills, but the real kicker is that it's a two lap course. So we get to go up a grand total of 4 giant hills.
The biking has been the hardest to train for. Because Columbia doesn't have a whole lot of open roads that aren't filled with traffic lights. Any good biking is on really busy roads and I'm not willing to take that risk. But, on race day the roads will have cones on them so I'm assuming it'll be safer than normal days. So I still haven't gotten the chance to ride 14 miles than run 3.
I'm really excited about the whole thing. Since it's my first tri, I'm just looking to finish even if that
means finishing last. Maybe next year I'll look for a decent time.

NHL post season
I wasn't able to watch the Canadiens v. Bruins live but the highlights made it seem like a great game. Carey Price did amazing with 31 saves. I've always had a lot of respect for outstanding goalies. Because it seems like such a difficult position, and to be great at it is impressive.

big ben's big wedding
Just a little personal background here. Ben Roethlisberger is getting married this summer to my cousin-in-law's (I don't know if that's actually a title) sister. So by marriage I'll be sort of, but not really be related to Big Ben. My cousins were invited to the wedding because they live in Pennsylvania and have actually had Ben over to their house. It's safe to say that my Steelers loving brothers and myself are extremely jealous

opening day
Is there any better day than opening day? There's nothing like the start of baseball season, especially in St. Louis. Stl is the epitome of a baseball town where at least 60% of the population wears cardinals gear or red on opening day (that's not an over exaggeration).
Players love playing for the Cards because the fans are awesome. The fans will cheer for players on the other team if they use to play for the red birds. People clapped for good ole' Ryan Ludwick when he stepped up to the plate yesterday. Last year I went to a game against the Reds (the only other central league team who could/did challenge the cards for the pennant) and everyone clapped for Scott Rolen. You don't see that kind of a fan base from the cubs.
We're all looking forward to a new season of baseball. Despite losing what seems like half our pitching staff and Holliday being out for a little while having an appendectomy.

VCU madness
forget march madness, this is VCU madness. Where in the world did this #11 seed come from? They seemingly appeared out of thin air. It was all about the 3's. They were able to stop the Morris brothers and Morningstar at the arch and somehow managed to deepen their offense past the 3 point line to get quite a few 3's off, particularly in the first half.
Being that I go to Mizzou, any loss for Kansas is a win for us. It's safe to say that VCU is now the best friend of MU. I want to just enjoy this win for what it was, and not talk about logistics (even though KU's lack of made free throw shots was quite something). So here's the ESPN article and a picture of this amazing upset.

that's saddening
Well, Anderson decided to go back to Arkansas. Can't wait to see who the new Mizzou head coach is going to be
coach anderson
Word is that Mizzou's head basketball coach is considering coaching for Arkansas next year. It's a shame because coach Anderson it well loved here at MU. But, if he does leave would be interesting to see how the current team would perform under a new coach. I guess we'll see in a few days once he makes his decision. Here's the ESPN article with more details

well....
Looks like we're all going to be watching a whole lot of NCAA football next season. here's the ESPN article about the NFL lockout.
If you ask me the whole thing is juvenile, because it's purely about who gets more money. Apparently 6 or 7 digit salaries aren't enough for players and billions of dollars just aren't enough for owners.

training update
I haven't been doing as much training for the triathlon as I've wanted to lately. But, hopefully with the better weather coming I'll be able to run and bike outside more. It's just so difficult trying to find a good time to bike at the gym given that any stationary bikes they have are always taken. Running is my worst discipline of the three so I've been really focusing on that. But, given that that until this week the weather has been horribly cold, it's been hard to get out and run. And, with my class schedule it's hard to find a time to run around the indoor track when everybody else isn't also there.
Before the tri I'm planning on doing one or two 5k's just as a bit of a warm up. 5k's are always fun because it brings a good diversity of people from the really athletic, who can run the whole thing in 17 minutes, to 65 year old grand parents (yes I actually have seen that before). I'm fairly confident in the swimming portion because 400 meters isn't that hard. It only takes me about 9 minutes to do it. 9 minutes is average but I'd like to improve my time because where you start in the race determines how fast you can swim the 400. This is because the swimming portion is inside and one at a time, so the race officials try to get the same speed people in at the same time.
It'll be hard, but I'm looking forward to saying that I did a triathlon (even if it's just a sprint triathlon).

drama in the club house
It's barely a week into spring training and the Cardinals have already gone through quite a bit of drama. What we've got this time is our amazing pitcher Adam Wainwright returning to st. louis because of an elbow injury. here's the ESPN article if you want to read more about it.
Everybody relies on their bull pen for a good game, but it seems the cardinals rely more heavily on it than others. This is because the Cards batting lineup isn't all that strong. With the exception of Pujols and Holliday (and possibly Rasmus once he gets another season under his belt) the starting lineup hasn't been known for their exceptional slugging skills.
Who knows if the injury is actually as serious as they think it is. But, the fact that they sent him back home isn't a great sign.

c'mon man
c'mon Pujols! I personally blame his agent for wanting an exorbitant amount of money. I can understand Pujols wanting more money because he deserves more money, but his agent was making that the only factor. I just don't want to see him ending up in an Angels, Yankees or even worse...Cubs uniform next year. Free agency it is.
As a St. Louisian and Cards fan I will always love Pujols. An announcer on Sports Center just said that if he goes to another team next year, then he won't be regarded well in St. Louis anymore. I don't know what he's talking about; but he clearly doesn't know anything about the town's love for Albert. No matter what team he plays for, we will always cheer for him. Always.

mizzou basketball
Before I start, my disclaimer is that I love the mizzou basketball team and go to every home game. But I'm being completely honest in this one.
My theory (among many others) is that they get overwhelmed by away crowds and pressure. Every team plays better at home, but it seems more poignantly obvious with the basketball team. I saw how pumped up Kim English got when the crowd was on their feet and cheering for MU at our most recent home game. And stats speak for themselves: we're undefeated at home this season. It just seems that they get affected by away games more than they really should. And as a fan, it's frustrating.
The three other main problems that keep the team out of a high rank is their lack of 3 point shooting ability, lack of rebounds and tempo of the game. I've seen them throw away too many points, and lets be honest potential game winners, by missing a substantial amount of 3 point shots. Although I'm not one for excuses, lack of rebounds isn't fully their fault. In comparison to other teams, the majority of our players aren't horribly tall. With the exceptions being Steve Moore, Richardo Ratliffe and Justin Safford. But, still that's no excuse for being more aggressive for the rebounds. They also tend to rush the floor too much. They did an amazing job at the beginning of the ku game in slowing things down and not rushing the net quickly every possession. I believe this is why they were able to lead for a short time in the beginning of the game. When they rush the floor they make bad decisions, which tends to lead to a bad shot which the other team rebounds.
With that all said I love Phil Pressey and Marcus Denmon. Phil is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to beat on defense, and is so much fun to watch. I'm glad he's just a freshman and will be around for a while. It's gonna be exciting to see him as a senior when he's got a few years under his belt. And of course Denmon is just good all around. Next year is going to be a great year with a lot of the star players being seniors.

pujols trade
Being that I'm from St. Louis, I love the Cardinals. And being that I love the Cardinals, I love Albert Pujols. There's been a lot of talk the last year or two about his contract ending at the end of the 2011 season.
This article describes the situation better than I can. But I'm going to highlight the basics and things I've heard from other sports people. Albert has the option to veto any trade decisions that may come along. This leads to him either re-signing with the Cardinals or becoming a free agent at the end of the season. If he decided to re-sign he will cost a lot of money to keep. This means that the Cards won't have a whole lot of money to spend on other big hitters or getting new, young players into the clubhouse.
The reality: He's going to stay with the Cardinals. He loves the town and the team too much to leave. In the past he expressed that he wants to stay with the Cards his whole career. He's done too much with the community (like setting up a charity) to leave. Even if he does leave and they get two picks from the draft, nobody can replace our slugger. Basically him staying is a win-win for both him and the team.
pro bowl
I don't want to talk too much about the pro bowl, but I figure it's worth at least highlighting it. I don't expect for the players to play like it's a playoff game but I expected a bit more. The AFC was just messing around the whole time, as evidenced by their half dozen picks. I'm fine with messing around, because this game is meant to be fun, but they didn't care and it was painfully clear. Oh well, maybe next year they'll put a little more heart into it.

18 game season
If you follow the NFL or watch ESPN somewhat regularly you're aware that the league owners want to change the current 16 game season to an 18 game season. This has been a big debate over the season, which might result in a lock out in March.
The stipulations are that they would cut the 4 preseason games to 2 and add two regular season games. The NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (who has made quite a bit of press this season with the new helmet-to-helmet rule and fines) says that he doesn't need players permission to change the rule.
Clearly the players are extremely unhappy about the possibility of an 18 game season. Having two extra games would make it that much more likely that players would get injured. Their pay wouldn't go up with the addition for the two games. As of now players get 5 years of health care and medical expenses paid for after they retire. The health care if obviously a concern when there's two extra games. On the other side of the ball are the owners who are all for an 18 game season. The main reason is because they will get more money out of it (if you put it simply enough).
I agree with the players on this account. Football is as full contact as a sport gets, and adding two extra opportunities for players to get seriously injured is a bad idea. I believe that the board should have player representation, so that they can see the sport from the point of view from the players. It goes without saying that the players know best when it comes to injuries and what they think is best for their health. If you boil it down, the big reason why the league wants an 18 game season is to get more money. It's as simple as that; they make other excuses but that's the main reason. They aren't thinking of what's best for the players themselves, and are focusing on making $1 billion more. Goodell cares about revenue more than talking to the players about the best option.

the hair
Anybody who has spend any time with me during football season knows that Troy Polamalu is my favorite player in the NFL. His athleticism and instincts for the game are amazing. Plus it doesn't hurt that he plays for my Pittsburgh Steelers.
As a side note everybody always asks why do I love the Steelers so much when I'm from Missouri. The answer is because my dad's side of the family is from Pittsburgh so I've always grown up watching them

hey
hey, so I decided to start a blog about sports and my opinions on them. Granted I don't claim to be a professional in any way, so a lot of the things I say will be biased towards teams or sports I like. I will also include things about fitness, which is fitting considering I'm a nutrition and fitness major at Mizzou. So please enjoy everything
